History of Richardson

Richardson was established in 1908 when the Texas Electric Railway connected the community to Denison, Waco, Corsicana, and Dallas. A red brick schoolhouse was built in 1914 and is now the administrative office for the Richardson Independent School District. The town incorporated and elected a mayor in 1925.
After World War II, Richardson experienced major population increases, growing from approximately 1,300 residents in 1950 to 56,000 by 1972. The opening of Collins Radio Richardson office and Texas Instruments' Dallas office on the southern border in 1956 spurred significant economic development.
The University of Texas at Dallas was established within the city limits in the 1960s. Richardson developed the Telecom Corridor beginning in the 1980s, transforming into a global technology hub. The city completed the Eisemann Center for Performing Arts and Galatyn Park urban center in 2002.
